KuMoHa 12
KuMoHa 12 is a class of Japanese electric power cars once used on the national railways. They are about 17 meters long, have a driver's cab at both ends, three doors on each side, and seating along the sides of the car.
Built in the late 1920s and 1930s for the Japanese Government Railways (JGR), these cars were later reorganized under Japanese National Railways (JNR). In 1953 the MoHa 12 class was formed from older MoHa 34 cars. In 1959, a classification revision added the KuMo prefix to cab-equipped power cars, giving KuMoHa 12 its current name. In total, 27 cars were built by converting other cars, and one car has been preserved.
They were operated by JGR from 1933–1949, JNR from 1949–1987, JR East from 1987–1996, and JR Central from 1987–2002 on various lines. Specifications include a steel body, 17 m length, 1,067 mm track gauge, overhead power collection, three doors per side, resistor-control traction with MT15 traction motors, and camshaft transmission.
