Stay Puft Marshmallow Man

The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man is a giant, friendly‑looking monster from the Ghostbusters stories. He’s a white, humanoid figure made of marshmallows, wearing a sailor suit with a blue collar, a red neckerchief, and a sailor hat with a red ribbon. In the 1984 Ghostbusters movie, he starts as a logo and becomes the form Gozer uses to try to destroy the world. Ray Stantz imagines the most harmless thing, so Gozer takes Stay Puft as the Destructor. The Ghostbusters fight him with proton packs and, by crossing their streams, destroy the gate he came through, melting Stay Puft into marshmallow rain.

Size and origins: In the film he’s about 100 to 112 feet tall. The idea came from Dan Aykroyd and designer Bill Bryan; the suit was worn by Bryan and operated with puppetry by Terri Hardin. He was inspired by real mascots like the Pillsbury Doughboy and the Michelin Man.

Appearances beyond the film: Stay Puft appeared in The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, comics, and video games. In Ghostbusters: The Video Game (2009) he returns and can spawn Marshmallow Minis. In the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, he shows up briefly as a balloon during a parade. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), smaller versions called Mini-Pufts join the action; they appear again in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024).
