David Glerup
David Glerup (born 1951 in Burns, Oregon) is a former sheriff of Harney County, Oregon. He went to Burns High School and Southern Oregon College, where he wrestled. He joined the Oregon State Police in 1972 and worked in Medford. He left the police in the late 1970s to run a private business in Burns.
In 1984 he was elected sheriff of Harney County, becoming the county’s only full‑time law enforcement officer at the time (the rest of the sheriff’s office staff were jailers and process servers). He was re‑elected in 1988 and 1992, then lost the 1996 election. He won the office again in 2000 and was re‑elected in 2004, 2008, and 2012.
In 2012 he, a deputy, and an FBI agent were involved in a deadly shootout with Philip Ferguson, a fugitive from Indiana who had embezzled $30 million; Ferguson died in the exchange.
Glerup retired in 2015 before finishing his sixth term, and was succeeded by David Ward.
