St. Mary's-Colgan High School
St. Mary’s-Colgan High School is a Roman Catholic, parochial high school in Pittsburg, Kansas. It is part of the Diocese of Wichita and operates under Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Parish.
The school was established in 1936 as St. Mary’s High School. The first class graduated in 1940, and the first yearbook, The Marian, appeared in 1941. Over the years, students started many clubs and activities, including music groups, drama, yearbook work, and a student government.
In 1967 the school was renamed Colgan Regional High School, and in 1989 it became St. Mary’s-Colgan High School. It moved into its own building in 1960 and later added large expansions in the 1990s, adding science labs, a library, and more classrooms by joining the junior high with the high school. The St. Mary’s Activity Center opened in 1991, and a major addition in 2004 included a weight room and other facilities. A commons area was added in 2008, and a church renovation was completed in 2017.
In 2018 the school created the Communities System, dividing students into three mixed-grade houses: St. Padre Pio, St. Teresa of Calcutta, and St. Maximilian Kolbe, with student leaders to promote cross-grade relationships.
Athletically, the Panthers compete in the 2A division in the Cherokee-Neosho-Crawford League. The football program has won seven state championships and had a 66-game winning streak from 2001–2004. The baseball team has 16 state titles and reached 30 championship games from 1964–2011. The school has a strong history of success across other sports as well.
The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic disrupted in-person classes and spring activities, with no spring sports, no prom, and many events canceled. The school supported students with remote learning and lunch deliveries during the disruption.
In the 2020s, the girls’ golf team won three straight state championships (2020–2022), and the softball team also won a state championship.
