Siyaj Kʼakʼ
Siyaj Kʼakʼ, also known as Fire is Born (and once nicknamed Smoking Frog), was a powerful political figure in the Maya world during the Classic Period (roughly 250–800 CE). He is best known for conquering Tikal in January 378 and for his influence over Uaxactun and Copan. At first, scholars read his name as Smoking Frog, but later they deciphered it as Siyaj Kʼakʼ, meaning “Fire is born.”
He is thought to have been a general for Spearthrower Owl, the ruler of Teotihuacan, and he came from Teotihuacan or was closely allied with it. In 378–379, he helped install new rulers in major Maya cities who claimed descent from Spearthrower Owl. As Fire is Born, he even wore Teotihuacano-style battle dress, and Teotihuacan architectural styles began to influence Maya buildings, especially the talud-tablero design.
Siyaj Kʼakʼ remained a dominant figure until his death early in the 5th century, acting as overlord to kings such as Yax Nuun Ayiin I (Curl Nose) of Tikal. His arrival marks a strong cultural influence from the Valley of Mexico, though scholars still debate whether this came through war or peaceful contact.
Some fiction also mentions him, such as The Legend of the Jaguar King, which places his tomb at Uaxactun.
