Robert Walter Richard Ernst von Görschen
Robert Walter Richard Ernst von Görschen (27 March 1864 – 4 January 1936) was a high-ranking Prussian civil servant who served as Vice-President of the Aachen government.
After finishing school in Kleve in 1884, he studied law and political science in Munich, Marburg, Heidelberg and Berlin. He passed his first law exam in May 1888 and began as a trainee barrister in Eschweiler in June 1888, being sworn in later that month. He completed his internship in Aachen and, in September 1890, started as a junior barrister with the Government of Aachen. After his second law exam, he became an assessor with the Aachen government and later worked with the governments in Kassel and the district offices in Stormarn and Wandsbek, before returning to Kassel in 1895. On 1 August 1902 he was promoted to governmental councillor. A month later he served as acting district administrator in Altenkirchen, and in October 1912 he became chief councillor of the Cologne government. On 1 June 1919 he was promoted to vice president of the Aachen government.
In 1923, during the French and Belgian occupation of the Rhineland, Görschen, together with Aachen President William Rombach and Police President Fritz von Korff, faced arrest for passive resistance. They were released on 23 January 1923 but banned from certain areas. The Inter-Allied Rhineland Commission moved them to unoccupied regions, and they traveled between several towns. By February 1923 they had a branch office in Wuppertal-Barmen and could resume their duties. After talks with the occupying authorities, the banishment was lifted about a year later, and on 12 March 1924 Görschen returned to Aachen. He then applied for retirement, which began on 1 July 1924.
Beyond his official career, Görschen played an active role in Aachen, holding leadership positions in various associations and institutions. He came from the old Görschen noble family. His parents were Robert Oskar Julius von Görschen and Elise Brüggemann. He was married to Emy Rosalie Marie Honigmann, and they had one son and one daughter. His son Hans-Wolf von Görschen became a honorary senator of the University of Greifswald, a banker and businessman in Cologne and Rotterdam, and a liaison in the Kreisau Circle.
