Sorana Cîrstea is a Romanian professional tennis player known for her aggressive baseline game. Born on April 7, 1990, in Bucharest, she grew up in Târgoviște and turned pro in 2006. She plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand and has been coached by Albert Costa since 2024.

Her best singles ranking was world No. 21 in 2013, and she has won three WTA singles titles and six doubles titles. She has reached Grand Slam quarterfinals at the 2009 French Open and the 2023 US Open, and she was a finalist at the 2013 Rogers Cup. In 2024 she made a deep run at the Dubai tournament, and in 2025 she enjoyed notable success in doubles, winning the Madrid Open title with Anna Kalinskaya. She also won the Tennis in the Land in 2025 and reached several other deep runs in late 2024 and 2025, including events in Japan and Hong Kong.

Cîrstea comes from a family of four; her parents are Mihai and Liliana, and she has a younger brother named Mihnea. Her mother introduced her to tennis at age four. She has cited Steffi Graf and Roger Federer as idols. Off the court, she has been sponsored by Adidas (until 2016) and then New Balance. She has used several racquets over the years, including Wilson early in her career, then Babolat, and since 2019 she has used Yonex.

Sorana is known for an attacking style, strong backhand, and the ability to generate sharp angles. Her first serve is powerful, helping her dictate play from the start of points. She remains an active player and has announced that 2026 will be her final season on the tour. In 2026, she was involved in a notable post-match moment with Naomi Osaka after a second-round match at the Australian Open.
