Rösche
Rösche is a German mining term with several related meanings:
- A water-drainage trench in a mine gallery (Wasserseige). To prevent backflooding, many Röschen were extended below the entrance or carried underground to a nearby stream or river.
- Channels or leats that move water into or out of the mine. Driving water leats (Aufschlagrösche) bring water to the mine, while drainage leats (Abfallrösche) take water away. Leats usually slope gently into the pit.
- Tunnel-like sections of mining ditch systems (Kunstgraben). These are not underground structures. In the Harz Mountains such a tunnel is called a Wasserlauf.
- Wetter-Rösche: a recess in the stowage used to extract ventilation in the mine.
