Sinjar (film)
Sinjar is a 2018 Indian film in the Jasari language, written and directed by Pampally. It is one of the first Jasari movies, created to help revive the language. The film won two National Film Awards: Best Feature Film in Jasari and the Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film of a Director, announced in New Delhi on April 13, 2018.
The story follows Ansar, his sister Suhara, and his fiancée Fida. In their customs, Ansar does not bring Fida home until after the wedding. While working overseas, Suhara and Fida are kidnapped by ISIS terrorists. The Ministry of External Affairs rescues them and returns them to Lakshadweep with other women who were held. It is revealed in the media that these women suffered brutal sexual violence at the hands of ISIS.
Ansar begins to doubt Fida’s past and whether she was also a victim. When he confronts her, she falls unconscious and later reveals she is pregnant, leading him to end their engagement. The film also shows that Suhara was a victim of abuse. Fida decides to raise her child as a devout Muslim. The film tackles sensitive topics such as sexual violence, cultural customs, and the challenges faced by women, aiming to inform and provoke thoughtful discussion in a balanced way.
Cast includes Srinda Arhaan, Mythili, Musthafa, Yassar, and Sethulakshmi. The movie’s visuals were shot by Sanjay Harris, edited by Lijo Paul, with music by Satheesh Ramachandran.
