White Lightning was an American psychedelic rock band that lasted from 1968 to 1971. It was started by guitarist Zippy Caplan and bassist Woody Woodrich. The band became popular in Minnesota, helped by Caplan’s fame from The Litter. A KDWB radio manager accidentally played their single, "Of Paupers and Poets," as if it were a Cream track, giving them early exposure. They also performed a cover of the William Tell Overture. White Lightning released music on ATCO Records, the Atlantic Records label. The group split up over musical differences, especially between Caplan and Woodrich. After the breakup, some members appeared in the film Zachariah and contributed to its soundtrack. Caplan later worked on other projects, including leading a Ventures-inspired tribute band, The Surf Dogs, in Minneapolis. Other former members continued to perform with various artists or pursue other music projects.
