Sinestro Corps
The Sinestro Corps, also known as the Yellow Lanterns, is a villain group in the DC Comics universe. Led by Sinestro, they use yellow power rings powered by fear, making them a dark opposite to the Green Lanterns who wield willpower.
Origin and purpose: The corps first appeared in 2006, created by Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver. Their power comes from fear, a concept tied to the fear embodiment Parallax. Sinestro, once a top Green Lantern, starts the Sinestro Corps on the anti‑matter world of Qward and recruits members who can inspire terror. Yellow rings and a yellow Central Power Battery on Qward fuel their war against the Green Lantern Corps.
How they operate: Each member is equipped with a yellow ring that channels fear into power. They recruit across the universe, use intimidation and brutality to spread fear, and are trained on Qward. Their goal, at least in Sinestro’s view, is to bring order to the universe, though they oppose the Guardians and the Green Lanterns.
Key storylines: The Sinestro Corps War is a major turning point, when the Yellow Lanterns strike Oa and clash with Hal Jordan and the Green Lanterns. The war brings heavy losses and forces new moves by the Guardians. Over time, Sinestro gains and loses power, even briefly controlling other fear‑based groups. The Blackest Night event ties the yellow fear energy to a larger multiverse crisis, and later stories see Sinestro trying to rebuild his corps and retake control of his domain as new threats emerge.
Aftermath and the modern era: In the DC Universe’s Rebirth era, Sinestro tries to reimpose order through fear, with family ties like his daughter Soranik joining him. Hal Jordan returns with a new Green Lantern ring, and the two Corps remain fierce rivals through cycles of conflict and uneasy truces. Warworld becomes a staging ground for Sinestro’s forces at times, while the Green Lanterns seek to limit the reach of fear’s power.
Power, insignia, and weaknesses: The Sinestro Corps has about 7,200 ring bearers, two for each of the 3,600 space sectors. Their rings are powered by fear and can be drained by Blue Lantern energy. The corps’ oath is spoken in battle, and their emblem is a yellow ring and symbol tied to Parallax, the fear entity.
Other media: The Sinestro Corps has appeared outside comics, including in Justice League Action and the Smallville series, where yellow rings and fear themes are explored in different stories.
