Down county football team – 2017 season summary

- Manager: Éamonn Burns. Home ground: Páirc Esler, Newry.

- McKenna Cup: Group stage, finished 3rd. They beat Queen’s University and Derry, then lost to Armagh away, ending their McKenna Cup campaign.

- National Football League (Division 2): After relegation from Division 1 in 2016, Down played in Division 2. They started with defeats to Fermanagh and Clare. There were rumors of a players’ walkout, which were denied. They then won two in a row, but later lost more games. The season ended with a draw against Cork away, which kept them in Division 2 for 2018 (no promotion or relegation that year).

- Ulster Senior Football Championship: They drew with Armagh at home (their first home draw in 12 years), then beat Armagh to reach the semi-final against Monaghan in Armagh. They beat Monaghan in the semi-final to reach the Ulster final against Tyrone in Clones. They were defeated by Tyrone in the final.

- All-Ireland Senior Football Championship: After the Ulster final loss, Down entered the All-Ireland qualifiers in Round 4. They faced Monaghan again but were beaten, ending the season.
