Albany and Northern Railway (A&N) ran about 35 miles from Cordele to Albany, Georgia, from 1895 to 1971. The line was originally built around 1890 by the Albany, Florida and Northern Railway (AF&N), which was leased to the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railway (SA&M) in 1892. After SA&M went bankrupt in 1895, AF&N reorganized as the Albany and Northern Railway.

In 1910, the Georgia, Southwestern and Gulf Railroad (GS&G) leased the A&N to create a Cordele-to-Gulf Coast line. GS&G later failed and dissolved in 1942, and the A&N operated on its own again. Passenger service ended in 1952, but freight and mail service continued.

In 1966, Southern Railway acquired both the A&N and the Georgia Northern Railway and, on December 31, 1971, merged the A&N into the Georgia Northern Railway.
