Sheffield Wednesday F.C.
Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, known as The Owls, is a professional football team from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. They play in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football, and are currently in administration because of financial problems. Their home ground is Hillsborough Stadium, which holds about 39,700 spectators.
Founded in 1867, Sheffield Wednesday is one of the oldest football clubs in the world. The club has a rich history and has won major trophies in the past: four League titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup, and one FA Community Shield. Notably, in 1991–92 they won the League Cup as a second-tier team, and as of 2025 they are the last team outside the top flight to win one of England’s major trophies.
The Owls’ biggest local rivals are Sheffield United, with whom they contest the Steel City derby. Their traditional home kit is blue and white striped shirts, and their crest features an owl.
Hillsborough became the club’s permanent home in 1899 after moving from Olive Grove. The stadium is linked with the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, a tragedy that led to major safety changes in English football.
Throughout their history, the club has experienced many ups and downs, including periods of promotion and relegation. They have spent many years in the top two divisions and have had several changes in ownership and management. In recent years, the club faced serious financial difficulties, and in 2025 they were placed in administration, with points deductions affecting their league position. Henrik Pedersen is listed as the current manager.
