On 2 March 2004, during an Ashura procession in Quetta, Pakistan, terrorists attacked with grenades and gunfire, then detonated their explosives. The attack happened in Liaqat Bazaar along the procession route from Alamdar Road toward Mezan Chowk. About 49 people were killed and more than 100 were injured, most of them from the Hazara Shia community. The attackers were three members of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a banned group. A police constable was later arrested for allegedly helping the attackers by letting them use his house to plan the assault. The attack drew condemnations from international leaders, including UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and OIC Secretary-General Abdulwahed Belkeziz, who called such acts terror. Japan also condemned the violence. Pakistan’s Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat said the extremists aimed to sow chaos.
