Sharif Uddin Chaklader
Sharif Uddin Chaklader is a Bangladeshi judge who served in the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court and is now retired. He was the assistant attorney general in 1991.
He was one of 19 judges who filed a petition against a High Court verdict that ordered the government to reappoint 10 High Court judges whose appointments were not confirmed by the BNP.
In October 2008, bombs were found at his residence at the Judges' Complex in Kakrail. Barrister Rafique-ul Huq condemned the presence of a major at the Supreme Court deciding the court’s cause list, saying it violated policy, during a discussion organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association protesting the bombs.
Also in October 2008, Chaklader and Justice Imdadul Haq Azad were moved from the criminal bench to the death penalty bench after they granted bail to more than 100 politicians detained by the caretaker government.
In February 2014, Chaklader and Justice AKM Shahidul Huq refused to hear a Jamuna Bank loan case after a minister asked for favor for one of the parties; the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association called for the minister’s termination.
On 25 May 2014, Chaklader abstained from work following a call by the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, the BNP lawyers’ association.
Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha sought an explanation from Chaklader and Justice Huq for remarks about the eviction of former prime minister Khaleda Zia in April 2015.
Chaklader retired in 2016.
