Brentford 1990–91 season

Brentford competed in the Football League Third Division. Ten days before the season began, manager Steve Perryman resigned and his assistant, Phil Holder, took over as manager.

Transfers were limited. The club bought goalkeeper Graham Benstead from Sheffield United and sold defender Roger Stanislaus to Bury. Eddie May was transfer-listed at his own request, while Keith Jones, Kevin Godfrey and Richard Cadette signed weekly deals.

The Bees started well, staying near automatic promotion after only two defeats in the first 12 league matches. However, late October and early November brought a couple of losses that dropped them into the play-off positions. Gary Blissett’s goals helped restore form, and Brentford ended 1990 in the automatic promotion places.

In the FA Cup they were knocked out in the third round by Oldham Athletic. In the Football League Trophy, Brentford reached the Southern Area final but lost to Birmingham City over two legs. The Trophy run coincided with a dip in promotion-chasing form, but the team recovered to win five of six matches late in the season.

Brentford finished 6th and faced Tranmere Rovers in the play-off semi-finals, but were defeated 3–2 on aggregate.

Top scorer: Blissett, 10 league goals (15 in all competitions). Attendance peaked at 8,021, lowest at 4,812, with an average home league attendance of 6,144.
