Battle of Chu and Talas (1658)

The Battle of Chu and Talas was fought in 1658 as part of the Kazakh–Dzungar Wars. It happened along the Chu River and the Talas River in what is now Kazakhstan. The Dzungar Khanate, led by Galdamba Batur, faced a Bukharan relief army trying to help the Kazakh Khanate against the Dzungars. The Bukharan force, about 38,000 strong and commanded by Abushukher, attacked the Dzungar camp at the Talas River. The Dzungars had about 3,000 troops. Galdamba Batur attacked the Bukharan army and chased them toward the Chu River, where he killed Abushukher. The battle ended in a Dzungar victory. As a result, the border between the Kazakh Khanate and the Dzungar Khanate was set from the Ayagoz River to the Talas River. After the war, Tauke Khan, successor of Jangir, established peaceful relations with the Dzungar ruler Sengge until the rise of Galdan Boshughtu Khan.
