Selenetherium

Selenetherium, meaning "moon mammal," is an extinct genus of elephants. It belongs to the elephant family (proboscideans) and is placed in its own genus, Selenetherium. The only named species is Selenetherium kolleensis.

What we know comes from a fragment of the lower jaw (mandible). The fossils were found in the early Zanclean stage of the Pliocene in Kolle, Chad, Africa. The genus and species were described in 2005 by Mackaye, Brunet, and Tassy.

Selenetherium is part of the subfamily Stegotetrabelodontinae within Elephantidae. Because only limited material has been found, much about its appearance and way of life remains unknown.
