San Andrés is a district in the middle of Pisco Province, in Peru’s Lima region. It borders the Pacific Ocean to the west, the districts of Pisco and Tupac Amaru Inca to the north, Ica Province to the east, and Paracas District to the south. The district was founded on October 19, 1900, and its capital is the town of San Andrés. It covers 39.45 square kilometers and sits about 27 meters above sea level. In 2005, about 14,134 people lived there. The area grew when guano ships operated off the coast, bringing Greek sailors who settled here in the 19th century and formed a Greek-Peruvian community known as the Greek Colony of San Andrés; their descendants helped build the town. Pedro Yika Briceño was the first mayor. Today, San Andrés is a prosperous district with a main square and many paved streets.
