Cinnamomum kanehirae
Cinnamomum kanehirae, known in Chinese as niu zhang, is also called the small-flowered camphor tree or stout camphor tree. It is a tall evergreen tree in the laurel family and is native only to Taiwan.
The tree can grow up to about 30 meters tall and 2 meters across. It has brown, cracked bark and smooth, yellow-green branches. Leaves are alternate, leathery, oval to elliptic, 10–15 cm long and 4–7.5 cm wide, green on both sides, usually with five main veins. The tree flowers from November to December and bears berries from September to October. The berries are green to dark purple and about 1–1.5 cm across; seeds are about 1 cm.
Cinnamomum kanehirae grows at elevations from 200 to 2,000 meters in broad-leaved forests, often alongside Cinnamomum micranthum. People use the wood for carving and furniture, and essential oils can be distilled from the wood, branches, and leaves.
