The Rose of Versailles features many characters inspired by real French figures. Here’s a short, simple guide to the main players and how they relate to each other.

- Marie Antoinette: The manga’s central figure. She marries the Dauphin at 14 to seal an alliance, clashes with Madame du Barry, and faces loneliness and political danger. She forms fraught friendships and rivalries at court.

- Oscar François de Jarjayes: The anime’s main heroine. Raised as a boy to guard Marie Antoinette, she becomes the Royal Guard commander. She loves Hans Axel von Fersen, who loves Marie, while Oscar also loves André. She fights for the people, and dies in the revolutionary turmoil.

- André Grandier: Oscar’s childhood friend and ally. Secretly in love with Oscar, he helps the revolutionaries. He and Oscar share a deep bond; he loses sight protecting her and later dies protecting her, after which they are joined in death.

- Hans Axel von Fersen: A handsome Swedish count who has a forbidden romance with Marie Antoinette. He also has a complicated friendship with Oscar.

- Madame du Barry: Louis XV’s lover and Marie Antoinette’s rival at court. She schemes against the queen and Oscar, and is eventually removed from Versailles and later executed.

- Rosalie Lamorlière: Adopted daughter who grows up close to Oscar. She seeks justice for her mother, is drawn into court intrigue, and later marries Bernard Châtelet. She serves Marie Antoinette during the Revolution.

- Louis XVI: King, husband to Marie Antoinette. He loves her deeply, tries to flee France, is captured, and is executed with his family.

- Louis XV: King and grandfather of the Dauphin; he has a relationship with Madame du Barry and dies of smallpox.

- Duke of Orléans: Louis XVI’s cousin who schemes to seize the throne. He later supports anti-monarchy groups and helps certain revolutionaries escape or hide.

- Gabrielle de Polastron, duchesse de Polignac: Marie Antoinette’s close friend who manipulates situations to her own benefit, and whose actions contribute to court trouble. She has a daughter, Charlotte.

- Charlotte de Polignac: Polignac’s daughter who is traumatized by her mother’s plots and ultimately dies by suicide.

- Henri de Guéméné: A cruel nobleman who commits violence, shocking Rosalie, Oscar, and André.

- Count of Girodelle: Oscar’s former fiancé. He is shocked into defiance when Oscar reclaims her identity and independence.

- General Bouillé and Colonel d’Agoult: Loyal monarch officers who navigate the shifting loyalties of the time.

- Loulou de la Lorancy: The heroine of a Gaiden arc. The daughter of Hortense (Oscar’s sister), she is royalist and brave, forming friendships with Rosalie and helping in royal investigations before later emigration.

- Maximilien Robespierre and Louis Antoine de Saint-Just: Leading revolutionaries. Bernard Châtelet (Robespierre’s ally) ends up marrying Rosalie.

- Alain de Soissons: A military man who starts out opposing Oscar but comes to respect and then deeply care for her. He loves her in the manga, forgives her leadership, survives the Revolution, and becomes a major character in Eroica. He has a sister, Diane, who dies after her fiancé marries another.
