SS Socotra was a British general-purpose cargo ship built for P&O and launched in 1896. Built by Palmers Shipbuilding & Iron Co. at Hebburn-on-Tyne, it measured about 6,044 GRT, was 450 ft long, 52.2 ft wide, and had a draught of 9.3 m. It was powered by two triple-expansion steam engines with twin screws, capable of about 12.5 knots. The ship carried cargo to and from the Far East and Australia. On 26 November 1915, SS Socotra was beached off Le Touquet, France with Australian cargo; the hull broke in two. The wreck lies near the wreck of the Orion. Socotra Rock was named after this ship, which discovered the rock during a Far East voyage in 1900. P&O later commissioned another vessel named Socotra, built in 1943 as a passenger ship and scrapped in 1965.
