On 11 November 2024, in Zhuhai, Guangdong, China, 62-year-old Fan Weiqiu drove a Beijing BJ40 SUV into pedestrians on the running track outside Zhuhai Stadium. About 300 people were exercising at the time. Fan went around the track at 70–80 km/h, striking many people and killing 38 while injuring 48, including the attacker. He then tried to stab himself and was arrested at the scene.

Police said Fan was unhappy about his recent divorce settlement, and the motive was linked to marriage problems and life disappointment. He had bought the SUV a week before the attack and picked it up the day before.

Fan was sentenced to death in December 2024 for endangering public safety by dangerous means and was executed on 20 January 2025. No foreign nationals were among the victims.

In the days after the attack, residents donated blood and a makeshift memorial appeared at the site, but authorities soon cleared memorials and restricted access as investigations continued. The attack led to tightened security for Zhuhai’s upcoming airshow. Officials urged severe punishment for the attacker and measures to reduce social risk. Some early details of the incident were delayed or censored in Chinese media, drawing criticism on social platforms and abroad. Japan advised its nationals to stay safe in China but said no Japanese citizens were among the victims.
