SS Corinaldo

SS Corinaldo was a UK refrigerated cargo steamship built in Scotland in 1921 for Donaldson South American Line. She was the lead ship of the Cor-class, serving on a weekly service between the UK and the east coast of South America, with two sister ships, Cortona and Coracero.

In 1936, Corinaldo was involved in a foggy collision with the French liner Eubée in the South Atlantic. Eubée’s stokers were killed and the ship was badly damaged, but Corinaldo rescued Eubée’s passengers and some crew. Eubée sank two days later, and Corinaldo was repaired and returned to service.

In 1942, during World War II, Corinaldo left Buenos Aires for Glasgow with a cargo of frozen meat and a crew including nine DEMS gunners. While part of a convoy, she was attacked by German U-boats. U-509 torpedoed her on 29–30 October, killing eight people (seven civilians and one gunner) and forcing her to abandon ship. HMS Cowslip rescued the captain, 41 crewmen, and eight gunners. Later, while drifting, she was again attacked and sunk by U-203 north of the Canary Islands, and her survivors were landed at Gibraltar.
