Joshua Pettegrove House
Joshua Pettegrove House is a historic Gothic Revival home in Red Beach, Calais, Maine. Built around 1854 on a 5-acre area called Pettegrove Point, it overlooks the St. Croix River near Saint Croix Island. The house and a carriage barn are wood-frame with a T-shaped plan and a steep gable roof, using clapboards and flush siding. The west-facing main block is three bays wide, with a left doorway, tall windows, and decorative vergeboard on the gable. On the second floor there are sash windows and lancet windows, plus a small trefoil window near the peak. The adjoining ell has two gabled dormers. A single-story porch runs along the south side. The property also includes a period carriage barn. It was built by one of two early owners; Edward Burgin sold it with cottage and stable to Joshua Pettegrove in 1854, and Pettegrove was an immigrant from New Brunswick. The architect is unknown. The house is one of Calais’s best-preserved Gothic Revival homes and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. It sits near the McGlashan-Nickerson House.
