Ruhudji Hydroelectric Power Station
Ruhudji Hydroelectric Power Station
Ruhudji Hydroelectric Power Station is a planned 358-megawatt (MW) hydroelectric plant in Tanzania. It will be built on the Ruhudji River in Njombe District, Njombe Region, about 75 kilometers southeast of the town of Njombe and around 760 kilometers southwest of Dar es Salaam. The project is expected to produce about 2,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity each year.
Ownership and development: The Government of Tanzania owns the project, and TANESCO (the state electricity company) will operate it. The project is planned as a public-private partnership, with TANESCO leading development.
Feasibility and design: A feasibility study and tender documents, worth about US$6 million, are being prepared by Multiconsult of Norway (leader) with Norplan Tanzania Limited and Tanzania Photomap Limited as sub-contractors. The plan includes an earth-and-rockfill dam 70 meters high and 810 meters long, creating a reservoir that can store about 269 million cubic meters of water.
Timeline: The project is currently proposed, with an opening date expected in 2028. It is being developed alongside the 222 MW Rumakali Hydroelectric Power Station, also in the Njombe Region.
