Rosana Chouteau
Rosana Chouteau was the first woman elected chief of the Osage Beaver Band, a clan of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. She became chief in 1875 after her uncle’s death. A year after her election, she is quoted as saying, "I think my band obey me better than they would a man." She is depicted in Judy Chicago’s art installation The Dinner Party, where her name is sometimes spelled "Rosa."
