Brno metropolitan area
The Brno metropolitan area is the region around the Czech city of Brno, in the South Moravian Region. It covers about 1,978 square kilometers and includes Brno plus around 184 nearby municipalities. About 730,000 people live there, making it the third-most populous urban area in the Czech Republic.
The area exists to coordinate big projects across municipalities in transport, education, the environment and social services, using the European ITI (Integrated Territorial Investments) framework. It is one of three metropolitan areas described in the Czech Regional Development Strategy 2021+.
A brief history: Brno’s territory was expanded in 1919 to include surrounding towns; in 1983 the Brno Urban Regional Agglomeration was defined; various plans followed in the 1980s. In 2013 the area was defined for ITI purposes. A 2014 Memorandum on Metropolitan Cooperation (updated in 2018) formalized collaboration with nearby towns. Brno joined the METREX network in 2016, and a new definition for 2021+ was set in 2020. Ivančice joined the cooperation in 2020.
Key projects include URBACT II Joining Forces (2009), the SPIMA project (2017–2018), and the METRO project (2020–2021). The aim is to use European funding to tackle metropolitan challenges through coordinated, cross-municipality efforts.
