Marjo (singer)
Marjo, born Marjolène Morin on August 2, 1953 in Montreal, is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Quebec. She started her career as a model and magazine editor, and managed a Montreal jazz club. She also acted in two musicals by François Guy. In 1979 she joined the rock band Corbeau.
After Corbeau disbanded, she co-wrote and recorded "Touch Me," the theme song for the film La Femme de l'hôtel, which won the Genie Award for Best Original Song in 1985. Her debut album, Celle qui va, was released in 1986. One of its early concerts was as the opening act for Eartha Kitt, but a press conference promoting the show turned controversial when Kitt pulled Morin’s hair and spilled wine in her lap. The album sold more than 250,000 copies, was certified double platinum, and won three Félix awards. A critic once compared her live show to James Bay for its electric energy. The album was released in France as Amoureuse, and she toured Europe.
In 1988 she contributed to Gerry Boulet’s Rendez-vous doux, singing on "Les Yeux du cœur." She released Tant qu'il y aura des enfants in 1990, which did well in Quebec with hits like "À bout de ciel" and "Je sais, je sais," plus the English track "Crazy Notions." The album earned four Félix awards, including Best Rock Album and Best Song for "Je sais, je sais," and went double platinum.
Her 1995 album Bohémienne went platinum and earned SOCAN awards; it was shortlisted for Best Francophone Album at the Juno Awards in 1996. She followed with Bootleg Blues (1998), Sans retour (2001), and Turquoise (2005). In 2009 and 2010 she released Marjo et ses hommes, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, rerecordings of her songs as duets with various male singers. Vol. 2 also includes the original recording of "Les Yeux du cœur."
She has not released a new studio album since Vol. 2, but continues to perform live, including a 2017 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day concert in Quebec City. In 2016 she also acted in Sophie Dupuis’s film Family First (Chien de garde).
