Rosa García Ascot
Rosa García Ascot (April 8, 1902 – May 2, 2002) was a Spanish composer and pianist from Madrid. She was the only woman in the Group of Eight, a circle of Spanish modernist composers that also included Julián Bautista, Ernesto Halffter and his brother Rodolfo, Juan José Mantecón, Fernando Remacha, Salvador Bacarisse, and Jesús Bal y Gay. She married Bal y Gay in 1933. Her best-known works are Suite for Orchestra, Prelude, and the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. García Ascot was a strong interpreter of Manuel de Falla’s music and is considered his last disciple. She studied first with Felipe Pedrell, then with Enrique Granados, and later with de Falla in Madrid. In the early part of her career she spent about ten years touring as a concert soloist and recitalist. After that, she gave relatively few public concerts, always in special circumstances. She died almost a month after her 100th birthday.
