Rodrigo Medina de la Cruz
Rodrigo Medina de la Cruz (born September 9, 1972, in Monterrey, Nuevo León) is a Mexican politician from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). He served as governor of Nuevo León from October 4, 2009, to October 3, 2015. Before that, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for Nuevo León’s 2nd district in 2006. He studied at Universidad Regiomontana (bachelor’s degree) and earned a master’s degree from the University of Miami. Medina has been linked to José Natividad González Parás, under whom he held several roles.
In 2009, he won the governor’s race, defeating PAN candidate Fernando Elizondo Barragán. During his term, the state’s debt grew from about 25 billion pesos to roughly 120 billion. He left office in 2015. Afterward, he faced legal problems connected to Operation Tornado and was held in preventive custody on January 26, 2017, along with others. The FBI and DEA reportedly investigated the Medina family over luxury properties in Texas; Medina denied wrongdoing, saying his wealth came from his own hard work.
