Retreat House and Dock

The Retreat House and Dock at Penn Center on St. Helena Island, South Carolina, is a waterfront building completed in 1968. It was planned as the meeting place for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., instead of the smaller Gantt Cottage where he stayed. The house faces Capers Creek and gives Penn Center guests a quiet place for meditation and relaxation. It replaced the Palmetto Cottage, built in 1920, which burned down in the 1950s. MLK’s associates used the Retreat House and Dock during the Charleston Hospital Strike in 1969. The site is part of the Penn School Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark District.
