Alaska Volcano Observatory
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) is a joint program of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAFGI), and the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys (ADGGS). It was formed in 1988 to monitor Alaska’s volcanoes, predict eruptions, and reduce volcanic hazards to people and property. AVO uses seismographs, webcams, satellite data, and field observations to track activity and issue alerts. It monitors more than 20 volcanoes in Cook Inlet and along the Aleutian Arc, where ash plumes can threaten aviation.
AVO operates from two locations: at the USGS office on the campus of Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage, and at the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska Fairbanks in Fairbanks.
The AVO website provides up-to-date information on volcanic activity, including maps and live data, so people can stay informed.
Monitored volcanoes include Akutan Peak, Aniakchak Crater, Pavlof Volcano, Redoubt Volcano, Shishaldin Volcano, Makushin Volcano, Mount Spurr, Mount Veniaminof, Mount Wrangell, Novarupta, Okmok Caldera, Semisopochnoi, and others in the Fox Islands and Andreanof Islands.
