Recipharm
Recipharm AB is a global pharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) based in Stockholm, Sweden. It started in 1995 when Thomas Eldered and Lars Backsell bought a Pharmacia tablet facility in Årsta and formed Recip. The company introduced the Recipharm brand in 2001. In 2007, the Recip business and its own product portfolio were sold to Meda, allowing Recipharm to focus on contract manufacturing. Growth came through acquisitions in Europe, the United States, and India, and the company went public on Nasdaq Stockholm in 2014. From 2014 to 2019, sales rose strongly due to internal growth and acquisitions.
Recipharm provides manufacturing across multiple dosage forms, including sterile fill and finish, oral solid dosage, and biologics, along with clinical trial material development and pharmaceutical product development. It serves large pharmaceutical companies as well as smaller research and development firms, producing hundreds of products. As of 2024, the company employs about 5,200 people and operates in more than 100 markets, with revenue of SEK 11,069 million reported for 2020.
In 2020, Recipharm completed its largest acquisition to date by buying UK-based Consort Medical for £505 million, adding roughly 2,000 employees, ten European facilities, and new device capabilities. In February 2021, private equity firm EQT acquired Recipharm for $2.1 billion. Mark Funk became CEO in March 2021, while founder Thomas Eldered stayed on the board; Greg Behar was appointed CEO in January 2024, with Funk remaining on the board.
Recipharm also runs an International Environmental Award to recognize outstanding environmental performance or innovation in the pharmaceutical field, with the final 2020 prize presented in 2021.
