Province of Potenza
The Province of Potenza is in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, with Potenza as its capital. It covers about 6,594 square kilometers and has around 370,000 residents (2017). There are 100 municipalities in the province. Its landscape includes Monticchio’s mountain lakes, the Lucan forest, Monte Sirino, the Pollino National Park (shared with Calabria), and Maratea on the Tyrrhenian coast. The largest cities are Potenza and Melfi. Historically, Romans conquered the area in 272 BC and called it Lucania. In the 11th century it joined the Norman Duchy of Apulia, then became part of the Kingdom of Naples from the 13th century, and joined unified Italy in 1861. The region is seismically active and has experienced earthquakes.
