Protean Threat is the twenty-third studio album by American garage rock band Osees. It was released on September 18, 2020, through Castle Face Records and is the first full-length album released under the name Osees. The album runs 38 minutes and 24 seconds and was produced by Enrique Tena Padilla, Mario Ramirez, and John Dwyer.

Frontman John Dwyer said Protean Threat was meant to feel like a punk record: shorter in length and made up of short songs. This followed their 2019 album Face Stabber.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the band previewed the album early with a rough single-take live rehearsal video on YouTube in March 2020, though the track order was different from the final release. Two tracks from that rehearsal were not included on the album but appeared elsewhere later.

“Dark Weald” was released as a limited-edition lathe-cut vinyl on August 23, 2020, and later became available digitally. A cover of Alice Cooper & The Spiders’ song “Don’t Blow Your Mind” appeared on the Weirdo Hairdo EP released December 18, 2020. On December 11, 2020, Osees released Panther Rotate, a remix album with experimental reworkings of several Protean Threat tracks.

Some songs from Protean Threat were performed during Osees’ Levitation Sessions live recording and in pay-per-view streamed shows in 2020.
