Concordia sulla Secchia
Concordia sulla Secchia is a town and municipality in the Modena province of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. It is about 50 km northwest of Bologna and 30 km north of Modena. The town covers about 41 square kilometers and sits at an elevation of 22 meters. As of 30 June 2017, about 8,435 people lived there, and residents are called Concordiesi.
Concordia sulla Secchia borders Mirandola, Moglia, Novi di Modena, Quistello, San Giacomo delle Segnate, San Giovanni del Dosso, and San Possidonio.
History:
- From 1311 it was part of the Pico della Mirandola fiefs; Francesco I Pico built a mill near the Secchia River.
- In 1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession, French troops besieged and burned the town.
- In 1711 the Duke of Modena (House of Este) acquired the Pico territories, including Mirandola, the marquisate of La Concordia, and the lordship of San Martino in Spino.
- On 29 May 2012, a strong earthquake heavily damaged the town center, including the church and town hall, and many historic buildings.
