Dalkeith is a town in Midlothian, Scotland, on the River Esk. It has about 14,300 residents (2020) and is the main administrative centre for Midlothian. The town grew from a 12th‑century castle, later replaced by Dalkeith Palace, and has four areas: Dalkeith proper, Eskbank, Woodburn and Newbattle.

Dalkeith has a long history. It received burgh status in the 1400s and developed around its historic core. A modern campus at Woodburn, opened in 2003, houses Dalkeith High School and St David’s High School and provides community facilities. Edinburgh College also has a Midlothian Campus near Eskbank.

The town is home to several historic buildings, including the Collegiate Church of St Nicholas Buccleuch on High Street, the Dalkeith Tolbooth, and the nearby Municipal Buildings. St Mary’s Episcopal Church and St David’s Roman Catholic Church are other notable churches in the area. Dalkeith Palace sits on the northeast edge of town, surrounded by parkland.

Dalkeith has good transport links. It connected to Edinburgh by the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway in 1831. A bypass opened in 2008 to ease traffic in the town centre, and the old route is now the A6106. The rail line rejoined the national network in 2015 with Eskbank station on the town’s western edge. Buses in the area are run by Lothian Buses, East Coast Buses and Borders Buses.

The town has a lively community with football and rugby clubs. Dalkeith Thistle FC plays at King’s Park, and Dalkeith RFC competes in the East Leagues. Dalkeith also has a tradition of strong rugby ties and has produced notable players.

Dalkeith is twinned with Jarnac in France, a link commemorated when Jarnac Court was repaved in 2004 to celebrate the connection. Archaeological work during road improvements has shown that people have lived in the area since the Neolithic, with evidence of various settlements and activities over the centuries, including a Roman camp and later industrial sites.

Key landmarks include the circle of stones in front of the Tolbooth marking where the last public hanging in Dalkeith took place (1827). The town remains closely linked to nearby Dalkeith Country Park and the surrounding estate of the Duke of Buccleuch. The Midlothian Community Hospital is just outside Dalkeith, near Bonnyrigg.
