Port Royale: Gold, Power and Pirates
Port Royale: Gold, Power and Pirates is a PC business simulation game set in the Caribbean and nearby Atlantic during the 16th and 17th centuries. It combines trading with real-time sea battles and let you visit towns to trade or take on adventures. The game is open-ended, so you can choose any path you like—whether it’s trading, fighting pirates, or privateering—and you can do many activities beyond just trading or hunting pirates. You can take missions from governors as your reputation with their country grows, and treasure maps can lead to wealth and the chance to create a private port. The game also features 12 different ship types, increasing in cost and power, from a small pinnace to a ship of the line.
Port Royale was created by Ascaron Entertainment and released in 2002. A sequel, Port Royale 2, came out in 2004. After Kalypso Media acquired the licenses in 2011, Port Royale 3 was released in 2012, followed by Port Royale 4 in 2020. The game received generally favorable reviews, with GameSpot naming it the best computer game of June 2003 and later nominating it for the Best Game No One Played award.
