Killed by My Debt
Killed by My Debt is a 2018 British drama film that aired on BBC Three. It tells the true story of Jerome Rogers, who died by suicide at age 20 after accumulating more than £1,000 in debt from two unpaid £65 traffic fines. The film shows the pressure from debt collectors connected to Camden Council and agencies such as Marston Holdings, and the impact on a courier worker’s life.
Written by Tahsin Güner and directed by Joseph Bullman, it stars Chance Perdomo, Craig Parkinson, Steve Toussaint, Juliet Cowan, Calvin Demba and Tom Walker. The film received strong reviews: The Sunday Times praised Perdomo’s performance but had reservations about the inserted videos of other debtors; The Guardian called it “a tale for our times,” and the Financial Times praised Perdomo’s empathetic performance and found the drama sometimes painful to watch. At the 2019 BAFTA TV Awards, Killed by My Debt won Best Single Drama, and Perdomo was nominated for Best Actor.
