Porsche C88
Porsche C88 was a one-off prototype built in 1994 for the Chinese market. Porsche designed a family car quickly—four months after China invited international automakers to propose new models. The four-door, front‑engine, front‑wheel‑drive sedan was shown at the 1994 Beijing Auto Show and had no Porsche badge. It even included room for only one child seat, reflecting China’s one‑child policy. CEO Wendelin Wiedeking unveiled it in Mandarin. Porsche Museum director Dieter Landenberger says that China liked the ideas and many later Chinese cars show similarities to the C88. The project also aimed to expand Porsche’s reach to India, but it wasn’t successful. In the 1980s and 1990s, Porsche also worked on small-car engineering for other brands, including the Audi RS2, Lada Samara, and SEAT Ibiza.
