Platte Lake, also known as Big Platte Lake, is a large lake in Benzie County in Michigan’s northwest Lower Peninsula. It covers about 2,500 acres, is roughly 3.3 miles long and 1.6 miles wide, and sits about 584 feet above sea level. The deepest point is about 95 feet, while the average depth is around 24 feet.

A river through the lake, the Platte River, flows downstream toward Lake Michigan. Water moves through Platte Lake at about 120 cubic feet per second, so the lake’s water is replaced about every six months.

Geography and geology
Platte Lake is one of two Platte Lakes in Benzie County (the other is Little Platte Lake). The surrounding area features sand dunes created by glaciers, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is nearby. Since 1970, this glacial landscape and the dunes have been protected by state law.

Lake environment
Seagulls, ducks, and loons are common around the lake, along with hawks, wild turkeys, and sometimes bald eagles. In the water you’ll find many fish species, including bass, northern pike, walleye, bluegill, and perch. Around the lake you may also see white-tailed deer, bears, and red foxes.

Invasive species
Zebra mussels have invaded Platte Lake and other Great Lakes area lakes. They can improve water clarity, but they are not native and have harmed native species like clams.

Climate
Winters are very cold and snowy, while summers are warm but not hot. Typical winter lows are around 17°F and highs around 31°F; summer lows about 55°F and highs around 78°F. The area can be windy.

Tourism and recreation
Platte Lake is a popular spot for vacation homes. The nearby town of Frankfort offers shops, restaurants, a lighthouse, and a pier. Other nearby attractions include Point Betsie Light and Sleeping Bear Dunes. Benzie County has many golf courses, and there are abundant opportunities for boating, fishing, and other water activities. Summer rentals are plentiful, and fishing is a major draw. A fishing license is required to fish Platte Lake.
