Pierre-René Lemas
Pierre-René Lemas (born 23 February 1951 in Algiers, French Algeria) is a French civil servant and banker. He is best known for serving as the Chief of Staff to President François Hollande from 2012 to 2014 and for leading the Caisse des dépôts et consignations (CDC) from 2014 to 2017.
Early life and education
Lemas was born into a Pied-Noir family. His father was a lawyer, and his uncle was a journalist for France Inter. He studied at Sciences Po and the École nationale d’administration (ENA). At ENA, his classmates included François Hollande as well as Ségolène Royal, Dominique de Villepin, Michel Sapin, Jean-Pierre Jouyet, and Henri de Castries.
Career
Lemas began his career in the cabinet of Interior Minister Gaston Defferre in 1981. He later worked in the cabinet of Pierre Joxe, focusing on decentralisation, and served as Cabinet Secretary to Jean-Michel Boucheron and Jean-Michel Baylet. He held various other senior roles in the government and was the Prefect of Corsica from 2003 to 2006, a period marked by intimidation against him. In 2011 he was Cabinet Secretary to Senator Jean-Pierre Bel.
From 2012 to 2014, Lemas was Chief of Staff to President Hollande. In 2014, he became head (managing director) of the Caisse des dépôts et consignations, a position he held until 2017.
