Olot–Girona railway
Olot–Girona railway was a metre-gauge railway in Catalonia, Spain. It ran 54.8 kilometres (about 34 miles) from Olot to Girona, crossing the Garrotxa volcanic park and following the valleys of the Fluvià, Brugent and Ter rivers.
The line opened in stages from 1895 to 1911 and closed in 1969. The first section, Salt to Amer, opened in 1895; Salt to Girona followed in 1898; Amer to les Planes d’Hostoles in 1900; Amer to Sant Feliu de Pallerols in 1902; and the final extension to Olot in 1911.
During the Spanish Civil War, many bridges were blown up and locomotives and rolling stock were lost. Flooding in 1940 damaged the tracks as well. In 1963 the railway was taken over by the state-owned FEVE, and it closed in July 1969.
Today the line has been converted into a greenway (a walking and cycling path) between Olot and Girona. Tunnels, bridges and several station buildings still exist. The old Girona station building beside the main-line station remains and is listed as part of Catalonia’s Architectural Heritage.
