On the Edge is a 2001 Irish drama film written and directed by John Carney in his solo debut. It stars Cillian Murphy, Tricia Vessey, Jonathan Jackson, and Stephen Rea. The 85-minute movie follows 19-year-old Jonathan Breech, who after his father’s death and a night of trouble ends up in a Dublin psychiatric hospital. There he makes friends, meets Rachel and Toby, and falls for Rachel. Through therapy and his growing feelings, he starts to confront his pain.

As the story unfolds, Jonathan and Rachel’s relationship deepens, while Toby’s friendship with Jonathan adds tension. On New Year’s Eve, a tragedy occurs: Toby dies while keeping a personal pledge. Afterward, Jonathan is told by his doctor that he must decide to value his own life. He escapes the hospital, goes to Rachel’s home, and confesses his love, suggesting they could be together in the future. The film ends with Jonathan and Rachel walking away together.

Reception: On Rotten Tomatoes, 63% of eight critics gave it a positive review, with an average rating of 5.4/10.
