Bill Ashton was a British jazz musician who led and shaped many projects for decades. He co-founded the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) and served as its Musical Director from 1965 to 2009, later becoming Life President.

He was born in Blackpool on 6 December 1936. He studied at Rossall School, did national service in the Royal Air Force, and went to Oxford University in 1957, where he began playing jazz at events and started the Oxford University Big Band. After leaving Oxford in 1960, he spent about nine months in France, playing on American army bases, before returning to London to join blues bands while teaching.

In the mid-1960s, he worked with Red Bludd’s Bluesicians and then helped start NYJO in 1965 alongside Pat Evans and Mike Kershaw. He dedicated himself to promoting British jazz talent—organising tours, making recordings, encouraging collaborations, and helping young composers publish their work.

His honours include MBE in 1978 and OBE in 2010, the BBC Radio 2 Jazz Award in 1995 for Services to Jazz, a Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians, and a fellowship at Leeds College of Music.

He died on 8 March 2025, aged 88.
