Olivia Dunham is the main character of Fringe, a determined FBI agent who works on a special multi-agency task force that investigates strange events tied to experiments by Walter Bishop and the alternate universe. She grew up with an abusive stepfather, which helped shape her fierce sense of justice and independence. As a child she participated in Cortexiphan drug trials in Jacksonville, Florida, giving her unusual abilities and a deep resolve to protect others.

Olivia’s work with the Fringe Division brings her into close collaboration with Peter Bishop and Walter Bishop. She also experiences the complex pull of memory and identity, including a mental link with Peter’s fellow agent John Scott after a dangerous experiment. Across the series she becomes known as the guardian of the gateway between worlds, a role tied to her Cortexiphan experience and her unique sensitivity to events across dimensions.

A major new presence is Fauxlivia, Olivia’s doppelgänger from a parallel universe who is introduced in the series’ second season. Fauxlivia has a different life and temperament—she is tougher and more self-assured, with her own relationships in her world (including a connection to Lincoln Lee and Frank Stanton). The two Olivias interact and even share a kiss, and at times their lives intersect in ways that affect feelings, loyalties, and the fate of both universes. Eventually they are separated again, and the parallel universe storyline leads to dramatic shifts in the main timeline.

In later seasons, Peter’s existence is erased from both universes, and Olivia’s life takes further turns. She discovers she is pregnant with a daughter, Henrietta “Etta” Bishop, who becomes a key figure in the resistance against the Observers in 2036. The Fringe team works to stop the invasion, with time-twists and discoveries shaping Olivia’s ongoing fight to protect her loved ones and her world.

Anna Torv portrays Olivia Dunham (and also Fauxlivia) and has received widespread praise for the performance, earning numerous awards. The character is described as highly driven, exceptionally intelligent, and deeply scarred by her past, yet capable of great courage and loyalty.
