North Mole Lighthouse
North Mole Lighthouse sits at the entrance to Fremantle Harbour in Western Australia. It began operating in 1906. The 9-metre tall cast-iron tower is tapered and cylindrical, painted red with white trim, and has a balcony and lantern. The red light sits at a focal height of 15 metres and can be seen up to 11 nautical miles (about 20 km). It marks the western edge of the harbour and its entrance, with the light on briefly and off for a 2-second cycle. The lighthouse and its green-coloured partner on the south mole are the last of their kind. It was designed by engineer C. Y. O’Connor. The light is powered by mains electricity and is managed by Fremantle Port Authority. Located at the end of North Mole Drive, the site is a well-known landmark for sailors, anglers, yacht racers, and birdwatchers. Severe storms in 1927 and 1935 affected the moles but did not seriously damage the lighthouses.
