Hong Kong has four main annual music awards, each run by one of the city’s four biggest media groups: RTHK, TVB, CRHK, and Metro Radio. A few additional awards are also given by other organizations.

Metro Radio Music Awards
Metro Radio’s ceremony usually starts the year’s awards season and is held on December 26 (Boxing Day). It tends to hand out the most awards, with the total rising from about 53 in 2000 to 137 in 2008. The venue has changed over the years, including HKCEC Hall 3 and AsiaWorld Arena.

CRHK Music Awards
CRHK’s awards are the second major ceremony. They are mainly based on airplay from CRHK’s radio stations (FM 90.3/CR2), counting spins that make the weekly Top 20. The public can vote for the My Favourite awards (Male/Female/Group and Song). The ceremony is usually on January 1. Venues have included the Hong Kong Coliseum, Hong Kong Stadium, HKCEC Hall 3, and AsiaWorld Arena (2007).

Jade Solid Gold Awards (TVB)
TVB’s Jade Solid Gold Awards are typically the third major ceremony, held in January. They are highly regarded, though opinions on winners sometimes vary. Venues have included the Hong Kong Coliseum, Star Hall (2008), and since 2011 TVB City.

RTHK Music Awards
RTHK’s awards are usually the last of the four and are the oldest, having started in 1978. They feature big prizes such as the Top 10 Golden Songs, Nation’s favourite male and female, and the Golden Song Award; the Golden Needle is a prestigious lifetime achievement award. To qualify for a Top 10 Golden Song, a song must reach the top three in RTHK’s Radio 2 Weekly Countdown. Fans and critics vote before the ceremony. RTHK also presents the Four Stations Joint Music Awards with the other three outlets.

Other major points
- The Four Stations Joint Music Awards: These awards are shared by all four stations and are based on music quality. They are organized by the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong and (historically) reflected album sales, with local labels receiving more recognition after some major labels withdrew from IFPI in 2008.
- IFPI Hong Kong Top Sales Award (Hong Kong Gold Disc Award): Started in 1977 and run by RoadShow, it was renamed over the years and ended in 2017. It was held in January and relied on sales data.
- Metro Radio Mandarin Hits Music Awards: This Mandarin-only ceremony ran from 2002 to 2015, hosted by Metro Broadcast and broadcast on Metro Info, TVB Wireless, and J2. It usually took place in July or August.

Note on a proposed award
In January 2001, IFPI Hong Kong explored creating a Grammy/Brit Awards-style music prize, but it never took place (as of 2014).
